Patients upset by long imaging test waits

Waiting for the results of tests upsets many a patient, and the information they get usually isn't satisfactory, according to a new U.S. study. The study, which looked at MRI, CT, ultrasound, mammography and X-ray results, found that patients were "decidedly dissatisfied" with such delays, according to lead investigator Dr. Annette J. Johnson of Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Researchers asked patients taking part in the study what experience they'd had with imaging, what they had wanted to know, and how they'd like to get results from such tests. The patients reported that they wanted quick reports, in writing. These results should offer detailed information in language they would understand, they told Johnson and her team.

Meanwhile, a large number of patients said they would appreciate having a secure way to see results online as soon as they were available, giving them a chance to prepare questions prior to doctor's visits, set up referrals as needed and learn more about their diagnosis.

The study appears in the November issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
