Nurse mindfulness can decrease patient pain, stress during procedures

Psychological support from nurses can help patients heal and decrease the pain during uncomfortable procedures, according to researchers from Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, who presented their findings at the EuroHeartCare 2014 conference in Norway last week. Patients who were told by nurses to imagine they were in a safe place, such as the beach, during cardiac ablation experienced less pain than those with no mindfulness intervention, researchers found. "Patients told us that visualizing their own safe place during the procedure made them feel involved and helped them cope with pain and anxiety," said lead author Marianne Wetendorff Nørgaard, a clinical nurse specialist at Copenhagen University Hospital, in a statement.
