No insurance? Why not fly to India?
Looking for a way to get that pesky hip replacement taken care of at a fraction of the cost? Well, it appears so are several Americans, who have taken to traveling abroad to do so. According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, India is fast becoming the country of choice for patients looking to get "complicated high-end procedures"--like heart surgery, organ transplants and several orthopedic replacement surgeries--taken care of for less money. Last year alone, 150,000 "medical tourists" from America, Britain and Africa, among other countries, visited India for its discount operations.
So what's the difference in price for a heart bypass surgery in India compared to the United States? Try $120,000 (the surgery in India costs $10,000, while in the U.S. it runs roughly around $130,000).
