N.C. 'Triangle' area sees $1.5B hospital building boom

The hospital building boom is having a particularly strong season in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina, familiarly known as the Triangle--though there's a building frenzy underway across the state, execs note. There's currently more than $1.5 billion in hospital construction either proposed or underway there, and the efforts involved could shift the region's health market substantially. Duke University Health System's $653 million expansion of its main hospital campus, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's $200 million cancer hospital, are among the largest projects. However, there's a number of smaller projects ongoing as well, as hospitals build (or plan to build) satellite facilities in the Triangle's outskirts. For example, WakeMed Health & Hospitals are currently building, or are scheduled to build, three $23 million satellite facilities. Some health systems, including WakeMed, are also upgrading aging facilities.
