Medical Marts offers doctor-staffed retail clinics

It looks like at least one retail clinic chain has found a way to dodge heavy fire from physicians. Retail clinic operator Medical Marts, which hopes to be running 400 retail clinics by the end of 2009, has decided to staff its clinics with a pair of primary-care physicians rather than nurse practitioners.

Using physicians seems to have insulated the firm, at least to date, from the withering criticism other players have faced from the American Medical Association and state affiliates.

The Las Vegas-based firm has already opened up seven clinics in Utah, and is building four in St. Louis and Virginia. It's also expanding across the Chicago metro.
