Live-tweets during Cincinnati hospital surgery reveal unexpected complications

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center intended on Friday to live-tweet for the first time during a gastric bypass and vagotomy operation for a 12-year-old girl with a rare medical condition that drew national media attention. But a few minutes into the operation, surgeons ran into an unexpected complication and decided not to follow through with the complicated surgery, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier.

The hospital decided to tweet about the surgery because of the attention on the girl's condition, which makes her feel as though she is starving, resulting in uncontrollable weight gain. But during the operation, surgeons discovered the girl's liver was larger than expected, "making necessarily visualization difficult." Three minutes later the social media staff at the hospital tweeted that the surgeons decided not to proceed with the operation. Instead, they went forward with a sleeve gastrectomy. Article
