Kentucky network LouHIE to create EHR banking system

Kentucky e-Health Network the Louisville Health Information Exchange (LouHIE) has plans to create a centralized electronic health records banking system for its members in the near future. The service would be free to all 1.2 million citizens throughout the Louisville area, and will allow members to store and manage their own health data via the Internet. Patients also will have final say as to which doctor's offices can look at their information. 

3M Health Information Systems and InterComponentWare, Inc. are slated to build and pilot the banking network, which essentially will also serve as a blueprint for other cities, regions and states that want to replicate the effort. 

"Louisville has been working on an electronic health data network for three years now--and we can be a national model for how to implement the system," Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson said.
