How hospitals in Detroit defend against ER violence

With increased attention on hospital violence, hospitals in the Detroit area are beefing up safety measures and security presence inside and outside of the emergency department, The Detroit News reported. For example, in addition to metal detectors and cameras, Beaumont Hospital's Royal Oak campus has added extra layers of security to keep its staff and patients safe by requiring employees wear personal panic buttons. To better respond to and thwart violent events, the emergency medicine rotation at University of Michigan Medical School includes a class on violence that teaches future providers how to use a non-threatening stance, tone of voice or posture.
