Hospital employment inches up

Although national unemployment remained unchanged at 9.1 percent, healthcare organizations added 43,800 jobs in September, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

As in previous months, healthcare jobs are on the upswing, while other industries, such as government jobs, are trending downward. Hospitals added 13,300 jobs for a total of 4.77 million in September (seasonally adjusted), up from 4.76 million in August, according to the report.

Ambulatory health services added 26,000 for a total of 6.2 million in September, up from 6.18 million in August.

Despite hospital layoffs in the news, the overall healthcare industry is one of few industries that offer hope in the general job market. Healthcare jobs stand at 14.18 million jobs. This time last year, healthcare stood at 13.84 million jobs.
