HealthSouth, surgeons settle kickback case for $15M
HealthSouth and two affiliated surgeons have agreed to pay nearly $15 million to settle civil claims related to what the federal government called a kickback scheme. HealthSouth will pay $14.2 million, while surgeons Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Larry Lemak will pay $450,000 and $250,000 respectively. The payments settle charges that arose from when HealthSouth, under prior management, billed Medicare and Medicaid for services to patients referred by Dr. Andrews and Dr. Lemak. The claims were filed during the tenure of disgraced former CEO Richard Scrushy, who's now in prison for an unrelated bribery conviction related to state government dealings.
