Healthcare jobs grow amid steady national unemployment

Hospitals added 5,700 jobs in August, bringing the total to 17,000 additional jobs in the healthcare industry, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said Friday.

While national unemployment still hovers at 8.1 percent across industries, healthcare, along with the food and drinking market and professional and technical services, saw boosts in employment last month.

Ambulatory healthcare services added 14,200 jobs, including 700 at physician offices, 1,200 at outpatient care centers and 7,200 at home health services settings. Nursing and residential care facilities, however, lost 3,200 jobs.

From June through August, job growth in healthcare averaged 15,000 per month, compared with an average monthly gain of 28,000 in the prior 12 months, BLS said. Data
