Health Disparities

Sadly, there are often large disparities in between the health outcomes of different minority groups, including higher rates of death from some conditions. Now, with a new president in place, advocacy groups are pushing for a group of legislative options they argue could have an impact on these disparities.

The groups, which include the American Hospital Association and 23 other healthcare and advocacy organizations, argue that equal access to care could be accomplished by offering incentives for appropriate care, more resources and better data collection that would point up disparities in care between minority and non-minority populations.

The coalition also recommends including language to expand the healthcare workforce in minority and other underserved communities.  They also advocate universal coverage.

I too have written an extensive letter to the President urging him to address this chasm. To improve healthcare outcomes we meed to address the minds of healthcare professionals not just give them access to more funding and better technology. It appears there is interest in disparties when there is a research study/grant to study the problem. We all know the problem, we have studied the issue for years. It is time for action not just words. So if the funding runs out the interest in healthcare disparties does not fade in the background.
