Senior Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has begun asking some hard questions about jobs held by Sen. Barack Obama's wife and one of his best friends. Grassley sent the University of Chicago Medical Center a letter saying he was concerned about reports of the hospital's efforts to steer patients with non-urgent complaints away from the facility's emergency department. This practice, which has drawn little fire in the healthcare community, generally involves directing patients to primary care settings where they can be better served. But apparently, it doesn't sit right with Grassley, who contends that the practice "culls the least profitable patients from its emergency room."

In his letter to the University of Chicago, Grassley asked for financial data, board minutes and other documents related to hiring, job promotion, business contracting and care for the poor. Where jobs were concerned, he focused in on salaries for two senior positions: executive vice president and vice president of community and external relations. The current EVP, Eric Whitaker, is a close friend of the Obamas, and the current vice president of community and external relations is Michelle Obama. Grassley also asked how the center decided how much charity care it would provide.

Are we to believe that this is not politically motivated? Yet another attempt to stir the pot and attach the Obama family to an issue full of inuendo, but little substance.

Anyone who has sat in an ER for 4 hours (National average) knows that some things are better treated in a shorter period of time, and by the way more cost effectively, in an Urgent Care Center or Primary Care Office. Politics pure and simple....the guy did not do his homework 1st.

Okay, so let me understand this clearly. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley (during an election year) questions the University of Chicago Medical Center's policy of moving non-urgent cases away from a busy ER to a non-ER setting...and their reasons for doing this are not to overwhelm their ER, but to improve those patient's care? How ignorant is that? I would say to Senator Grassley, it's not about profit...it's about PATIENT CARE. This is clearly a win-win. The patient's who need to be seen urgently, hense they are in the ER in the first place, are seen and cared for quickly, and those patients with less urgent problems are triaged out. I commend the hospital for having a very forward-thinking, patient-centered policy for ER visits.

No wonder I could not get a response from Grassley several years ago concerning a "real" Medicare fraud I had encountered with a local hosptial. If I had known someone running for an office, perhaps he would have paid attention! Typical "current" Republican tactics with this "investigation" to distract from what the Republicans are doing.
