FTC asks Supreme Court to review hospital merger

The Federal Trade Commission on Friday requested that the U.S. Supreme Court review the proposed merger between Phoebe Putney Health System and Palmyra Park Hospital in Albany, Ga. The FTC this time last year had filed a complaint against Phoebe's Putney's acquisition of Palmyra because the allegedly anti-competitive deal would allow the combined hospitals to raise prices for general acute-care services for commercial health plans and potentially harm patients. However, in July, a district court judge dismissed the FTC in favor of the merger deal to move forward. The FTC's petition from the Solicitor General of the United States asks that the Supreme Court review the federal appeals court ruling. Press release
