The executive pay at Miami's Jackson Health System is the subject of scrutiny, though, not over high numbers. Instead, industry experts say that the new team of executives is not being paid enough for the responsibility of turning around the financially troubled organization.
Meanwhile, as the public closely eyes the executive pay of healthcare executives, hospitals and health systems that offer generous paychecks justify them by arguing strong, capable leadership calls for appropriate compensation.
Joshua Nemzoff, a Philadelphia hospital consultant, said that the executive team's pay may not reflect those of other hospitals, in a Miami Herald article.
The team compensation includes the following:
|
Name |
Title |
Compensation |
|
Carlos Migoya |
CEO |
$590,000 |
|
Don Steigman |
Chief Operating Officer |
$490,000 |
|
Donn Szaro |
Chief Strategy Officer |
$500,000 |
|
Fernando Salgado |
Chief Transformation Officer |
$450,000 |
"These are not market rates..." Nemzoff said. "Spending a few million dollars on an executive team for a system this size is fine if it is the right team."
For example, CEO Migoya gets $590,000, which is less than the two previous CEOs, according to the article.
Jackson Health faces the challenge of changing the loss of $400 million in the past three years. Nemzoff, along with Sal Barbera, a former hospital executive and current university professor, question whether the new leadership team has the experience to overhaul the hospital's finances that lay ahead, highlighting the controversial debate about high executive salary for appropriate leadership.
