Evaluate core competencies of hospital leaders
With senior leaders responsible for helping their organizations meet new cost, quality and patient safety requirements, they need to constantly evaluate themselves and their staff to measure success and failure, HealthLeaders Media reported.
For instance, they can focus on core competencies, such as quality, financial performance and community mindedness when evaluating senior leaders and senior deputies. Another core competency of successful hospital leaders is the ability to communicate internally, the article noted.
And with Lean initiatives found to improve patient safety and reimbursement rates, evaluators should be considering whether senior leaders and deputies can successfully implement Lean initiatives. A key skill for Lean leadership--exceptional relationship-building, FierceHealthcare previously reported.
"A lot of collegiality and teamwork is necessary," Nancy Schlichting, CEO at Detroit's Henry Ford Health System, told HealthLeaders. "That means telling stories and confronting issues at the moment you see them."
When determining senior leaders' success of failure, the evaluator also can look for leadership traits that are aligned with changing healthcare trends, such as appreciation for and experience in technology or a long-term view for partnership and collaboration.
Schlichting also recommends giving steady feedback on how well senior leaders and deputies are performing against self-imposed goals.
