Established physician groups more likely to adopt medical home model

Large established physician groups are more likely to adopt the much touted medical home and preventive care strategies, according to University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and Urban Institute researchers in two new Commonwealth Fund commissioned studies.

The first study, "Measuring the medical home infrastructure in large medical groups," led by Dr. Diane Rittenhouse of UCSF School of Medicine, reports that practices with more than 140 doctors and those owned by a hospital or HMO are most likely to support the medical home model. Rittenhouse surveyed several large physician practices throughout the country, focusing on those that treat patients with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, congestive heart failure and depression. Dr. Robert Berenson, who led the Urban Institute study,"A house is not a home: keeping patients at the center of practice redesign," identifies the many benefits of the medical home model.
