Dialysis for illegal immigrants becomes issue in Las Vegas

Talk about finding a way to stir up strong feelings. A daily newspaper serving Las Vegas has published an article noting that a taxpayer-supported medical center spends $20 million a year, and that the immigrants who go there have been referred by for-profit hospitals.

The story, which appeared in The Las Vegas Review-Journal this week notes that while under EMTALA, hospitals must offer stabilizing treatment to anyone who walks into their doors. It also reminds readers that treatment must be provided, regardless of whether the patient can pay for care--and regardless of whether they are U.S. citizens.

Since U.S. citizens with end-stage renal disease automatically qualify for Medicare to cover dialysis costs, and immigrants are not eligible for Medicare, hospitals are well aware that patients who don't have insurance and aren't on Medicare are almost exclusively illegal immigrants to the U.S.

Each emergency dialysis visit is estimated to cost the public University Medical Center, where immigrants typically get care, about $15,000. Officials are saying that dialysis costs are forcing them to lay off workers.

Our take: I have no doubt that the hospital is struggling, but I'm forced to wonder whether the newspaper chose a good time to inflame anti-immigrant passions when the cost of dialysis in this case, though high for UMC, is a drop in the bucket from a national reform standpoint. Review-Journal editors, care to share with me what you had in mind other than encouraging local citizens to become agitated or even violent toward undocumented or even legal immigrants? I'm anne@fiercemarkets.com and would welcome a dialogue.

I do not understand why the US thinks it has an obligation to everyone. I have worked in healthcare for 30 years and am sick of everyone thinking it is too expensive and a perfect science. Death is a part of the continuum of life. Is our system perfect-"no". I am sick of paying for the taxes that pay for people that do not work nor will ever contributed to the US by way of taxes or by defending our country in the military and etc.; et expecting free care. It is not just those from border states but the thousands that people bring in as relatives that have never contributed and now get free care. It is also the citizens that will not do manual labor or take an unpleasant job. The 25% of my salary in taxes I contribute to pay for everyones care. Could supsidize the 4+ hours/day I do not get paid for as an exempt employee in the hospital. I work the extra hours to get the job done. I am not rich and don't get everything a want or dream about having. I have insurance and have went to an emergency room once in my life. I have used the community clinics for colds and etc. when I could not get into my primary care doctor. Why do I have to subsidize those that abuse the ED to get primary care. Why do I have to subside those that want free care but get their hair and nails done every week or party every weekend and pay for the booze yet not expect to pay anything for their hospital visit. Come walk in a hospital for more than a day and see the real world. I think deportation if family can not care for the patient should be allowed. It is not the hospital nor other healthcare entities that should have to give care for free.

I so agree with the above comment...... I live in Virginia and work in healthcare as well. It's bad enough that we pay for those individuals that are citizens. On a regular basis I also see individuals with cell phones better than mine, Nails all done and hair fixed as well. I knew someone who lived in government housing and only paid $7 to live there, had food stamps and free healthcare. This goes on for years with many people. Many people live on the system all their lives and then teach their children that is okay to do the same. I think there should be a better system for screening these individuals. Immigrant or not. I think that they all should be given a year and then cut loose. If I have to get a job and pay for my family there is no reason why everyone else shouldn't. Why does the USA feel obligated to take care of everyone in the world. We should take care of our own backyard before we go helping the others. Immigrants should be subject to the same rules. If you can't contribute and be self sufficient then you should be deported. Go back and be a burden on your own country.
