CT may require health plans to offer autism coverage
Right now, few states require that health plans cover the diagnosis and treatment of autism, which typically leaves parents with huge financial burdens. In Connecticut, however, the state is close to passing such a bill.
The Connecticut House of Representatives has just passed a bill, already approved in the state Senate, that requires coverage of behavioral therapy for autistic children under 16, as well as some coverage for prescription drugs, and psychiatric and psychological services. Without such coverage, it can cost $2,000 to $5,000 just to diagnose a child with an autism spectrum disorder.
The bill is now on the desk of Gov. M. Jodi Rell, and if signed, would take effect January 1.
