Hospital accused of threatening, interrogating nurses

Interrogative tactics and videotaping nurses engaged in union activities are just two of the charges brought against Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich., by the Michigan Nurses Association (MNA), which filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations board on Tuesday. MNA claims Borgess was "premeditated" in its actions related to contract negotiations.

According to John Karebian, MNA's executive director, Borgess leaders not only "threatened and coerced" nurses by removing employee protections, but also tried to avoid working with the labor union as a bargaining representative, something he called insulting.

"The decision by the management of Borgess Medical Center to attempt to take away the existing assurance of the voice of the nurses at the bedside without just cause shows a disregard and disrespect for the profession of nursing and the nurses that practice in their facility," Karebian said.

The actual complaint accuses Borgess of trying to "deal directly with employees" during contract negotiations, offering only "take-it-or-leave-it" deals to such employees. The complaint also says that Borgess interrupted nurses at various points throughout the day with an emphasis on promoting its bargaining proposals, and that the hospital threatened "economic penalties" for rejection of Borgess' proposal.

In my personal opinion, I feel the Michigan Nursing Association, can observe his or her past and present behaviors. The behaviors concerning the pictures and video footage which illustrate patient care procedures. Sometimes this medical information is shared with the media, posters are created in panoramic view and placed on stands in main lobbies of medical centers. This was once considered unacceptable.

When I attended college for the radiology and ultrasoundsonography program at El Centro community college, My syllabus consisted of patient confidentiality and I was instructed of patient confidentiality. Patient confidentiality consisted of filming, taking pictures with patients and or any medical employee for exhibition was unacceptable.

It seems, as though the Nursing association formed a crowd, his or her marketing department overrode, procedure, policy and quality patient care.

Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, merely used the exact techniques, to substantiate, maintain and establish his or her point, "What amount can the MNA nursing care services be worth?

The utilization of the labour union is an organization, which collaborates in the negotiating bargaining talks. He or she plans to improve departmental workplaces, benefits and wages. Most American Healthcare facilities collaborate with the union organizers, but top level management, prescribe a group within his or her hierarchy, to whom dedicates himself or herself in the laboor grievances.

These grievance activities have to be scheduled for a set time, a goal must be demonstrated in order for a meeting to be held. Renewing contractual agreements is the primary reason why, the Nursing Union would intercept in healthcare business.

The MNA can step back and seek ways of how he or she cam imrove the delivery of healthcare with a scant increase in wage, and request a training course for patient confidentiality.

Bobcat- What in he world are you trying to say? You must have skipped the basic writing class at your community college as your words make no sense....?

I have to agree, I had a hard time following your comments. After my fourth(!) reading, I think that you're trying to say that the MNA has internal problems that it needs to address, such as confidentiality issues. I'm not sure how that ties in with the charges that BMC is not negotiating fairly with the nurses or the union. Are you saying that BMC has the right to videotape nurses during contract negotiations because MNA videotaped and released information on patients? Please explain.

The message I am conveying is this, the contract is up. The opposition investigates the quality of work production. The payroll budget is planned.

This is how work is evaluated. The Nurses whom are affiliated with the MNA are being appraised, by the hospital The union is an appartatus, used to perserve humanitarian benefits. The decision for payraises is in the hands of the top level ADM.

I apologize that payraises are not cyclic/ continuous, automatic.
