CMS begins inspection of troubled King-Harbor

Federal inspectors have begun their in-depth review of operations at Los Angeles-based Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital, which has seen countless troubles in recent months. If King-Harbor doesn't pass the CMS survey, it will lose about $200 million in funding, or about half its annual budget. Without federal funding, county officials say they'll be unable to keep King-Harbor's doors open. CMS should report its results Aug. 15.

Meanwhile, even if King-Harbor passes the CMS inspection, it still faces closure. California regulators have begun the process of revoking the hospital's license in light of well-publicized problems with the care it delivers, including the recent death of a 43-year-old mother waiting for care in its lobby.
