CIGNA's H. Edward Hanway - CEO Compensation
Comments
Dawn Smith lives in Atlanta. Four years ago, she was diagnosed with a rare, but treatable brain tumor. Her doctors are ready to remove it, but they can't because CIGNA refuses to pay for the surgery.
Dawn has been fighting CIGNA on her own, but now she's asking for help. CIGNA may be able to ignore her, but they won't be able to ignore millions of us standing together.
I just added my name to the group of people standing with Dawn. Will you join me so we can shine a light on Big Insurance's abusive tactics, get Dawn the care she needs and make sure they don't do this to anyone again? You can sign at the link below

Wow. He made a base salary of $1,142,885 in one of the WORST years, but the company he runs won't pay for brain surgery on someone they insure because the only place that can do the surgery "out of network"?
Slammin.
Dude's a rock star.
I am disgusted by the salaries I hear about of the healthcare executives.
I just learned of Dawn Smith's plight and NO ONE should be made to suffer like this when these companies are so flush with money!!!
Also, no one should be profiting that much off of someone else's pain and illness.
If the top brass can pocket millions, then they can CERTAINLY afford to allow their customers life-saving treatments and not price gouge them for much-needed pharmaceuticals.
It's not the insurance companies that set the price of the drugs. The insurance companies negotiate with drug producers to get the best deal for their members. Get pissed at the drug companies, not the insurance companies. You show pure ignorance about the system that we have. All insurance companies do is price for the risk with less than 1% profit margin. Insurance companies are at the mercy of Drug manufacturers, doctors, hospital, etc. that increase the cost of the services they provide by 10-15% each year. We all need to stand up against these healthcare providers and not accept their large increases each year. The only reason those against the current system go after Insurance companies is because they know they can control all of our lives from Washington if they have complete control.
It is a mistake to call these people "healthCARE" workers... They don't care about the health of their policy holders. Their only concern is the bottom line and they will do everything that they can to ensure that healthcare reform remains an elusive pipe dream.
Mr. Hanway is retiring at the end of 2009 at the ripe old age of 57. Sheesh, I guess after collecting such huge pay days over the years, he can afford to.
I just learned of Mr. Ed Hanaway's Executive salary via Forbes. I also read a letter written by a CIGNA employee about his outstanding service, and dedication to healthcare to his clients and customers. Oh, guess he forgot about Dawn Smith. Whoops! A committed client to CIGNA paying roughly $800 in health care premiums yet is being denied life saving brain surgery via CIGNA. Wow, Edward, you sound like a great guy. Must be nice to be able to retire at age 57. How is it Mr. Hanaway can look at himself in the mirror each morning?
It is kind of funny how nowhere you can find the whole story of Dawn Smith. It is probably because it is a joke story to play a sob story and go after the big bad insurance companies. Insurance companies are regulated heavily. If this story was a true sob story the Department of Insurance would have stepped in and taken charge. This Michael Moore tell you bits and pieces and leave out the majority of the story is a joke and does not fool anybody!
Lets hear the whole story before we jump to a conclusion. 99% of sob stories turn out to be non sob stories once you hear the facts.
If the tumor is a threat the hospital is mandated to do the surgery. Regardless of whether or not CIGNA will cover the surgery is not the issue. If the place that does the surgery is not in network than the hospital is at fault for not trying to be a Network provider for CIGNA. If it is an experimental surgery, I am sorry but what if we all wanted experimental surgeries done. The cost of healthcare would be vastly more expensive than it is now.
This story seems like a fraud to me. Be a little skeptical of sob stories like these.
I have been fighting with Cigna for 5 years. They have refused to pay for my allergy shots-their reason- allergy shots are "experimental". I indicated that Medicare paid their share and such treatments have been standard treatment for those who can take the shots since the 1960s and they certainly are NOT experimental....
I appealed through the companies appeal process and a review board agreed with me and advised I would be paid. After 1 year of waiting and repeated letters--STILL no payment and every month I must foot the bill for my allergens my self to the tune of $600 + with Medicare reimbursing me about $176. Nothing from Cigna. Since I am a retired lawyer(and a teacher in the State of Ill. with mucho Fed. Court trial experience, I guess I will have to file suit(perhaps a class action suit)for all of us so similarly situated--to get Cigna to give me my money. I know they can afford it--Hanway made over $12 million in 2008. I CAN'T wait for a public option...I do not know WHY the State of IL. keeps Cigna on....I pay $900 a month for me and my wife under the Teacher Plus plan. It is rediculous! I know many others have more serious problems but all denials such as this is just plain fraud. Hanway should go to jail instead of getting a bonus for screwing policy holders.
