Case study: U of Kansas Hospital beats patient volume records

Here's an encouraging story that mirrors the recovery of hospitals across the U.S. The University of Kansas Hospital has set new records for patient volume during its more recent fiscal year, with discharges climbing 8 percent over the previous fiscal year.

The hospital's inpatient discharges for the fiscal year ending on June 30 were 24,209, compared with 22,393 from the previous year. Outpatient revenue climbed to 337,359 encounters, up roughly 13 percent from the 298,920 logged the year before.

The hospital's operating revenue from fiscal '09 was the highest ever. It climbed to $750 million last year, rising 12 percent from the $669 million it booked the previous year.

The hospital, which is affiliated with the University of Kansas Medical Center teaching facility, has 596 beds and about 500 staff physicians.
