CA fines nine hospitals for putting patients at risk
California has slapped nine hospitals with $25,000 fines for putting patients at imminent risk of injury or death, marking the first time the state has fined hospitals under a new law going into effect Jan. 1. The fines, while relatively modest, set the hospital industry on more equal footing with nursing homes and health plans, which were already subject to state fines. However, hospitals still face much lower fines than nursing homes, which can be hit with $100,000 penalties.
Two fines were assessed against Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital, which was cited in two incidents where critically-ill patients failed to get the care they needed. This included one now-famous incident in which a woman died in pain on its lobby floor without receiving medical attention. King-Harbor's hospital facilities are closed, but it still runs urgent care and outpatient clinics.
Other fined hospitals included Enloe Medical Center, Hanford Community Medical Center, Saint Agnes Medical Center, Universal Health Services, Garden Grove Hospital and Medical Center, Kaiser Foundation Hospital Santa Clara, Glendale Memorial Hospital and Feather River Hospital.

Adult Stem Cells Have Ability to Develop and Replicate Like Embryonic Stem Cells

Creators of First Natural Dietary Supplement, StemEnhance(TM), Say Adult Stem Cells Could Be Answer to Enhance Lives of Millions of People Worldwide
SAN CLEMENTE, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Nov 13, 2006 -- Many stem cell specialists agree that adult stem cells are a vital area of research, often underappreciated by the public, and could hold the secret to helping the body maintain optimal health.
According to Christian Drapeau, MSc, Chief Science Officer, StemTech HealthSciences, Inc., there has been a wealth of scientific papers published over the last few years proving that adult stem cells have virtually the same qualities as embryonic stem cells. While human embryos were once thought to be the only source of these "super cells" that could regenerate a wide range of human tissue, this recent research has proven that adult stem cells have the same ability to develop and replicate in a wide variety of forms, a property known to health science as pluripotency.
"As a nation, we're involved in this 'false' debate as to whether we can use embryonic stem cells," said Drapeau. "The public should put this entire debate aside and shift its focus to adult stem cells." Drapeau said he agrees with the opinion of Dr. David A. Prentice, Ph.D., Senior Fellow for Life Sciences, Family Research Council Affiliated Scholar, Center for Clinical Bioethics, Georgetown University Medical Center, stating that "supporting the release of your own cells is the easiest, safest and most efficient way of using stem cells."
StemTech HealthSciences, Inc., a pioneer in nutraceutical development and marketing, is the creator of StemEnhance(TM), the first natural dietary supplement proven to support adult stem cell circulation. StemEnhance has been shown to support and increase naturally occurring adult stem cell release from bone marrow.
In human beings, adult stem cells are most abundantly found in bone marrow from birth onward. However, over a lifetime, there is evidence that in some people, the number and quality of these cells circulating through the body gradually decreases. This may make these people more susceptible to age-related health challenges. StemTech's product boasts a patented blend of extracts from a widely consumed aquatic botanical and it can actually support the release of these cells, improving the body's ability to maintain optimal health. With StemEnhance, individuals can help to slow the age-related decline of normal processes like stem cell release and cell repair.
One key advantage of utilizing adult stem cells, said Drapeau, is that they are not foreign to the body and are not as immature as embryonic stem cells, thus thwarting the problems of immune rejection and possible tumor formation. "Our product supports the natural release of adult stem cells from the bone marrow, optimizing tissue and organ function in the body," he said. "The body is an amazing creation, if you simply help it to work at optimal levels, it will facilitate wellness on its own."
