Bush commission to examine veterans' healthcare

President Bush

Spurred by reports of atrocious conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, President Bush has established a commission to study how wounded soldiers are cared for when they return to the U.S. The bipartisan commission will be led by former senator Robert Dole, a disabled World War II veteran, and former HHS secretary Donna Shalala. Bush has also asked that the VA secretary create a task force addressing near-term problems in caring for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. As Bush's commission and task force gear up, an independent review group is busy assessing outpatient treatment at Walter Reed, with a report due within 45 days. Meanwhile, hearings on Walter Reed's problems continue on Capitol Hill, with Army leaders taking significant fire from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
