BS of California offers $6M in HAI-prevention grants

The Blue Shield of California Foundation has announced plans to award almost $6 million in grants to assist the state's hospitals in reducing the number of hospital-acquired infections. The grants come as part of a larger, $13.1 million package which will partly go to expanding health insurance for children who don't qualify for public medical assistance.

The $5.75 million in grants follows on the success of its nine-hospital project, and will expand the number of hospitals enrolled in its California Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention Initiative to 100 or more facilities. Some of the grants are targeting specific subtypes of infections; for example, the health plan is giving $105,000 to the California Children's Hospital Association to help reduce catheter-associated and other infections in neonatal intensive care units.
