Presbyterian Rust Medical Center Partners With Advanced ICU Care®

Collaboration Brings 24/7 Coverage and a Tele-ICU Solution to Critically Ill Patients

RIO RANCHO, N.M.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- New Mexico’s first 21st century hospital announced today the successful implementation of the most advanced critical care telemedicine program available in hospital intensive care units today.

Presbyterian Rust Medical Center (RMC), part of Presbyterian Healthcare Services, partnered with Advanced ICU Care, the nation’s largest independent provider of tele-ICU services, to deliver monitoring by highly trained intensivists physicians and critical care specialists 24 hours a day, seven days a week enhancing the quality of care delivered to intensive care patients. RMC is the first hospital in New Mexico to partner with Advanced ICU Care in implementing such a program.

“This partnership with Advanced ICU Care allows us to serve more critically ill patients right here in Rio Rancho,” said Denise Gonzales, M.D., medical director of RMC. “Our patients are receiving the best recommended standard of medical care available with the collaboration between their doctor, the hospital critical care team and the remote telemonitoring oversight of Advanced ICU Care.”

Advanced ICU Care’s team of intensivists and critical care nurses work around-the-clock, complementing the care plans that RMC’s physicians set in motion during the day. The intensivist physicians and critical care team are able to view real-time vital signs, physiological data, medications, lab results and the patient’s full medical history at all times. Automated alerts identify problems before they become urgent, prompting immediate intervention. When two-way communication needs to occur between the bedside and Advanced ICU Care team, either party can initiate a two-way video conference.

“This extra layer of care reassures doctors that their sickest patients are vigilantly monitored when they are not present,” said Gonzales. “There is a deep sense of relief knowing that emerging issues are dealt with immediately, and patients are receiving the highest level of care at a moment’s notice.”

Independent studies demonstrate that this 24/7 intensivist monitoring significantly improves patient outcomes and patient safety in the critical care unit. In fact, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) demonstrates how the implementation of a tele-ICU intervention was associated with reduced adjusted odds of mortality and reduced hospital length of stay, as well as with improvements in best practice adherence and lower rates of preventable complications. Another study published by the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI) recommends that community hospitals with 10 or more ICU beds adopt tele-ICU care.

“We are pleased to partner with physicians and clinicians at RMC to provide additional surveillance and support of their critically ill patients,” said Mary Jo Gorman, M.D., MBA, chief executive officer for Advanced ICU Care. “This strong alliance of critical care expertise combined with the most advanced telemedicine technology is working together to benefit and improve the health and safety of these patients.”
