Massachusetts General Hospital Seeks to Validate RFID in Healthcare Supply Management:

Mobile Aspects Clinical Resource Management Solution is focus of Journal of American College of Radiology (JACR) Article Evaluating Benefits of RFID vs. Barcode Based Inventory Management Systems

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Mobile Aspects is pleased to announce its clinical resource management solution iRISupply is the focus of a non-sponsored independent research study completed at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The article highlights the potential financial advantages, benefits to quality and safety as well as increase in staff satisfaction regarding the implementation of RFID technology compared with the current barcode based inventory management system used within Interventional Radiology.

Having successfully implemented a barcode based system in 2001 MGH was able to tighten its control on supply spend while reducing on hand inventory. While the barcode system offered clear advantages over traditional paper based logs, limitations of the technology were soon realized. Scanning barcode labels coupled with manual cycle counts to reconcile supply usage versus on hand inventory were two of the major challenges identified with barcode systems.

Looking to set a new standard in quality of care, MGH set out to explore the potential of passive RFID technology as an inventory management solution within Interventional Radiology. Thus in 2008 the organization took a scientific approach to comparing the performance of their current barcode system with Mobile Aspects RFID enabled iRISupply units.

Upon conclusion of a 10 month implementation and testing period, IR at MGH was able to achieve significant financial benefits while at the same time increasing patient safety and staff satisfaction.

  • An increase in charge capture of 2.1 Million Dollars or a 20% increase.
  • Achieved a 30% reduction in technologist non-value added FTE per day
  • 70% Reduction in stock outs
  • 10% Increase in patient safety through early detection and removal of expired medical devices.

The article, written by those who oversaw the implementation and use of the systems first hand, cited several reasons as to why they were able to achieve such unprecedented levels of success.

“The ultimate benefits of implanting RFID technology are achieved when the technology itself is leveraged to sustain the aforementioned improvements by automating the communication between the hospital and supplier, and then in turn, assigning the use of a specific item to a specific patient for safety and billing purposes.” - JACR Volume 8, Issue 3

Looking toward the future, Mobile Aspects and Massachusetts General Hospital plan to continue working together by expanding the usage and volume of supplies tracked to departments outside of Radiology.
