A-Life Medical, Inc. Expands Growing Network of Professionals with New Appointments and Promotion

Three Director Positions Added as Company Continues to Expand

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A-Life Medical, Inc., the pioneer and leading provider of computer-assisted coding (CAC) products and services to the healthcare industry, announced today that it has named three new directors and promoted its engineering manager, all in an effort to fuel the company’s continued, rapid growth.

Rand Smith has been named to the newly created role of director of finance and administration, reporting to A-Life President Jaye Connolly. In this capacity, Smith will be responsible for managing all financial and administrative aspects of the company. Smith brings 20 years of financial-related experience to his new role, having garnered significant expertise working with start-up, growth companies and healthcare technology-based enterprises. Most recently, Smith served as controller and corporate secretary for iMetrikus, Inc., a healthcare technology company, where he handled all financial and accounting functions, corporate governance, shareholder as well as Board matters, human resources and facilities management. In addition, he prepared the company for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance by developing programs incorporating policies, procedures, training and adherence to the rules and regulations.

Additionally, A-Life appointed Maryagnes Marek director of sales. Marek, a seasoned professional in the coding arena, joins A-Life from MedQuist, the largest provider of transcription services, where she served as vice president of coding for the past seven years. Marek will primarily focus on business development efforts for the company’s hospital subsidiary, A-Life Hospital, which provides CAC solutions to hospitals. She will report to David Byrd, vice president of business development.

Marek has thirty years of extensive health information experience spanning corporate sales, business development, operations, academia, systems management, strategic expertise and not-for-profit executive leadership. Marek has built a reputation as an expert in the Health Information Management (HIM) sector. She has written and presented for various national and state organizations and was instrumental in the development of the remote coding vision throughout the HIM profession. She serves on various committees within the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), as well as state and local relevant organizations.

Concurrent with these new appointments, A-Life also promoted Craig Scott to director of engineering and information technology (IT). Scott initially joined A-Life in May 2000 as a software engineer, and in his new position, he will lead the engineering groups for both A-Life Medical and A-Life Hospital. This includes managing new software development and ongoing enhancements to the corporate IT infrastructure to ensure scalability, security and redundancy. Scott has 15 years of healthcare IT experience and reports to Mark Morsch, vice president of technology.

“A-Life is rapidly expanding as it continues to use its proprietary, innovative Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology platform to meet the industry’s evolving billing and coding needs. A-Life provides its services to an array of healthcare providers across various specialties as well as billing entities. They recognize the value of computer-assisted coding, which is quickly enhancing the way in which the billing function is performed. A-Life’s cutting-edge solutions are being embraced market wide, based on their ability to streamline the billing function, lower costs and enhance productivity and efficiencies. As a result, we continue to expand our network as we add new positions, identify and attract seasoned professionals, and/or promote current talent within the organization,” Connolly noted.

“In fact, in 2009, we grew our employee base by 50 percent. Our focus this year is on further strengthening our management team, and we are already ahead of this initiative for 2010,” Connolly explained.

Smith, a resident of San Diego, earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in finance from San Diego State University. Marek lives in Sicklerville, N.J. and is a member of American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), which includes the New Jersey Health Information Management Association. She holds a Master’s of Science degree in health service management and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in management, both from La Salle University.
