GE Centricity Perinatal Helps Improve Access to the Comprehensive Patient Picture

Software Helps Hospitals Go Paperless and Exchange Information Fluently at the Center of Care

BARRINGTON, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Touro Infirmary (New Orleans, La.) implemented Centricity* Perinatal in the NICU in December 2010, completing its roll out to all perinatal units, with the goal of providing the most up-to-date and innovative care available. The site chose the scalable system as a key to further customization and to enhance the ability to implement changes quickly as patient care situations evolve. The Touro Infirmary wanted to assure complete documentation while doing away with most -- if not all-- paper charting, which can be lost or damaged. Since going live in December, the facility’s nursing staff has appreciated the concise charting options, statistical calculations as well as the benefits of becoming nearly paper-free. Centricity Perinatal also saves them time, as the system pulls data automatically, reducing errors caused by manual data input. “(Centricity Perinatal) has provided us with a very large step forward,” said Irene Mitchell, Primary Care Manager of Labor and Delivery at Touro. “It gives us a comprehensive patient picture and more complete documentation of each and every patient that’s ever stayed with us.”

Touro’s story is one of hundreds told everyday on the Centricity Perinatal platform.

Others recently welcomed into our family include:

  • BJC HealthCare (St. Louis, Mo.)
  • Brookwood Medical Center (Homewood, Ala.)
  • Capital Regional Medical Center (Tallahassee, Fla.)**
  • CHRISTUS Health (Houston, Tex.)
  • Huntsville Hospital (Huntsville, Ala.)
  • The Methodist Hospital System (Houston, Tex.)
  • Midwest Regional Medical Center (Midwest City, Okla.)

  • St Petersburg General Hospital (St Petersburg, Fla.)**
  • Sutter Coast Hospital (Crescent City, Calif.)
  • West Florida Hospital (Pensacola, Fla.)

“After the initial learning curve of a new system, (our clinicians) appreciated how comprehensive and user friendly (the platform) is,” added Mitchell. “Our physicians enjoy the ability to review patient data and fetal strips from the comfort of their office or home; many have stated that it gives them a sense of security that so much is readily accessible to them. The nursing staff has appreciated the concise charting options and the ability to do away with most if not all pieces of paper charting which can be lost or damaged. We also have a Birth Log that populates with delivery information for both mother and child. It helps us calculate statistics including types of delivery, complications and MD month to month rates.”

“Our customers sit at the center of our innovation, and we thank them,” said Don Woodlock, Vice President and General Manager of GE Healthcare IT’s Specialty Solutions business. “This loyal customer base is realizing the advantages of utilizing a customizable, flexible, tailored departmental solution that is designed for specific use in the perinatal unit while fully connected to the Enterprise EMR. We’re using their input to further enhance clinical workflow, increase quality, improve access and interoperability and, ultimately, work to drive down costs in the healthcare system.”
