Anthem Blue Cross Introduces Tool to Help Reduce Costs and Bring Administrative Efficiencies to California Physicians and

Rollout of Availity® Health Information Network and CareProfile® Will Benefit Physicians and Patients

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Anthem Blue Cross announced today it is introducing a new information network that will bring efficiencies to the state’s health care providers while helping to reduce costs. Anthem is rolling out the Availity network at no charge to physicians and hospitals across the state, streamlining the administrative interactions between health care providers and health plans.

With Availity, health care providers in Anthem’s network can use a secure, Web-based exchange to quickly and easily:

  • Obtain current insurance coverage information on patients (including eligibility and benefits)
  • Submit claims online
  • Monitor the status of claim submissions
  • Access patient clinical history and care alert messages

Physicians also will have access to CareProfile®, Availity’s claims-based electronic medical record that provides 24 months of a patient’s most recent medical history. CareProfile provides a view of a patient’s care across providers, including office visits, hospitalizations, diagnoses and procedures, medications, lab results, radiology history and immunizations. For example, CareProfile makes it easy for a specialist to see what medications a patient has been prescribed by other doctors, allowing the specialist to prevent possible adverse drug interactions. The clinical messages help foster the physician-patient relationship by increasing awareness of disease symptoms, health risks and compliance with best practices.

“Making patient information more readily available to providers is important in helping improve efficiency and quality in health care,” said Pam Kehaly, president of Anthem Blue Cross. “Availity’s efficiencies allow providers to spend more time with patients, not managing paperwork, ultimately reducing health care costs while improving patient outcomes.”

Russ Thomas, chief executive officer for Availity, says, “Anthem Blue Cross is underscoring their commitment to help providers manage their business even more efficiently in response to the financial pressures of health care reform. Ultimately, patients are the winners in this scenario, as great efficiency can drive better outcomes at lower costs. Availity helps providers get connectivity to the information they need, and Anthem supports system-wide efficiencies. It’s a great partnership.”
