Transforming telemedicine a focus for providers

Mandatory telemedicine training, doctors who embrace the services and evolving programs are examples of how providers can integrate the technology fully into their organizations.

At Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, for example, doctors are required to know how to use the telemedicine services, according to Healthcare IT News. They “need to be involved in redesigning the human experience,” CEO Stephen Klasko, M.D., tells the publication.

Hospital Corporation of America, which has a telehealth program covering 20 states, has transformed the services it offers from “technology-focused telehealth to clinically focused, technology-enabled telehealth,” vice president of telehealth Christopher Northam says in the article.

OhioHealth also looks to continually improve its telehealth offerings. The telestroke program was overhauled to allow clinicians the ability to conduct remote workups and better help patients with myriad neurological conditions, Healthcare IT News reports.

Such efforts also mean finding the right doctors. Klasko says that they need new skills, such as a grasp of new technologies and innovations, not just knowledge of biology.

In fact, last month the American Medical Association created a new policy that urges telemedicine training to be part of medical school curricula.
