Florida hospital taps Watson to improve oncology care

Oncologists at a Florida hospital are using the power of data analytics and artificial intelligence to provide individualized cancer care.

Jupiter Medical Center announced it is partnering with IBM Watson for Oncology to provide physicians a more robust perspective of evidence-based treatments.

The deep learning system combs through more than 300 medical journals and 200 textbooks and spits out a ranking of the most effective individualized treatment options based on characteristics of each patient’s disease.

“Harnessing the power of Watson will help our oncology multidisciplinary team identify individual treatments,” said Abraham Schwarzberg, M.D., chief of oncology at Jupiter Medical Center. “One of the first in the country to implement this incredible tool, Jupiter Medical Center continues to be a regional leader in integrating technology to provide cutting-edge clinical care.”

Other health systems have tapped into one of the most recognizable AI systems to improve patient satisfaction, treat diabetes, address population health concerns, and solve medical mysteries in minutes.

IBM has invested heavily in Watson technology, particularly in the healthcare industry, but so far, the cost has outweighed profits.

“IBM has pursued big, bespoke moonshot initiatives that can take years and are extremely expensive,” Gartner research fellow Tom Austin said recently. "It seems like they’re swimming upstream with that."
