Medsphere acquires Wellsoft to enhance its emergency department capabilities

Health IT company Medsphere Systems Corporation plans to acquire Wellsoft Corporation, which specializes in emergency department information systems.

Wellsoft’s core product, the emergency department IS platform, targets improving the workflow of emergency departments and urgent care centers. Wellsoft has been in the IT market for 30 years, and its capabilities include patient tracking, clinical documentation, orders and results, reimbursement, clinical decision support, discharge planning, and data management. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wellsoft has been ranked number one by KLAS Research 14 times since 2002 in the software and services–emergency department market segment category, most recently in 2019, according to a Medsphere press release.

“You only have to look at the awards and recognition Wellsoft has received to recognize what a significant addition to the CareVue EHR platform this is,” said Medsphere President and CEO Irv Lichtenwald in a statement. “We’re very excited about the tremendous clinical value of Wellsoft and CareVue together and we look forward to working with Dr. John Santmann and his team on our shared ethic of making affordable, comprehensive healthcare IT available to all providers.”

Following the acquisition, Medsphere plans to combine Wellsoft's emergency department IT platform with its existing RCM Cloud revenue cycle suite and its CareVue electronic health record platform to offer a comprehensive solution for urgent care centers, the company said.

“With this merger, we have the opportunity to expand as an integral component of a larger, integrated enterprise solution for healthcare providers," said Wellsoft founder and CEO John Santmann, M.D., in a statement. "In our early conversations with Medsphere, we also recognized shared goals and values—specifically, a commitment to empowering healthcare organizations without asking them to sacrifice other clinical initiatives by overpaying for healthcare IT.”

As part of the merger, Santmann will step into the CMIO role at Medsphere.

Last month, Medsphere announced the acquisition of HealthLine Solutions for its hospital supply chain inventory applications that use bar coding and RFID technology. Medsphere officials said that with the addition of Wellsoft and HealthLine, the company's CareVue platform now satisfies the clinical, revenue cycle and inventory management needs of all inpatient acute and behavioral health facilities.
