HHS CIO replaced

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) CIO Beth Killoran has been reassigned from her role as chief information officer.

As Federal News Radio first reported, Killoran will join the Office of the Surgeon General at HHS. Ed Simcox, the agency’s chief technology officer will step in as acting CIO until a permanent replacement is named. (Federal News Radio)

Feds take Anthem to court to get information on MA plans

The Department of Justice is asking a court to compel testimony from Anthem about the insurer’s Medicare Advantage plans, including information about retroactive chart reviews performed by a third-party analytics company.

The feds are looking into whether Anthem “chose to disregard” whether results from the analytics company—Verscend—identified invalid diagnosis codes that were already sent to CMS. Court documents show prosecutors may be close to filing a complaint against the insurer alleging violations of the False Claims Act. (FierceHealthcare)

One Medical is set to close $200M funding round

Primary care startup One Medical is on its way to a $200 million funding round from the private equity firm Carlyle Group, CNBC reports.

The tech-forward provider, with backing from Google’s parent Alphabet, has raised more than $180 million in capital since it launched in 2007, and boasts a valuation of more than $1 billion. (CNBC)

Amazon adds high-profile cardiologist to its ranks

Maulik Majmudar, M.D., the former associate director of healthcare transformation at Massachusetts General Hospital, has accepted a new post at Amazon where he’ll try to crack the difficult task of getting physicians to integrate new digital tools into their practice.

“The thing that truly attracted me was the opportunity to work with really meaningful products and services at the scale and scope Amazon has” around the world, Majmudar said in an interview with Stat. “There is an incredible amount of opportunity to bring into practice existing technology and digital tools that actually improve the experience and health and wellness of patients.” (Stat)
