Mobile kidney dialysis - Health technologies for veterans

A wearable device that provides continuous kidney dialysis is among the projects funded through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Innovation Initiative. Rather than requiring patients to visit VA dialysis centers several times a week, this device provides round-the-clock dialysis that steadies metabolic and fluid states while patients go about their daily lives. In addition to helping patients feel better, it reduces the need for appointments, medication and dietary and travel restrictions, the VA says in its stakeholder report.

Testing began at VA medical centers in 2012 and will continue through 2013. It's already been redesigned into a smaller, lighter device, and still must go through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval process.
