Who: Karen S. Rheuban
Occupation: Director, Karen S. Rheuban Center for Telehealth at the University of Virginia Health System
Why she's influential: Last spring, Rheuban’s work promoting telemedicine at UVA Health System was recognized in a very visible way--the institute renamed its center for telehealth after her.
There’s no denying the growth of telemedicine in the healthcare industry, and Eric Swensen, public information officer at UVA Health System, calls Rheuban, a co-founder of the center, a “pioneer” when it comes to the technology.
Rheuban has worked at policy and patient care levels for 20 years, looking to expand telemedicine use both in Virginia and throughout the U.S., Swensen says. UVA’s telehealth center has seen more than 50,000 patient encounters since its inception, he adds.
She also serves as a trustee of the Swinfen Charitable Trust; the organization connects hospitals in developing countries with medical specialists at UVA and beyond via telemedicine.
