Psychiatrist accused of sex with patient loses license

A Kansas psychiatrist has lost his medical license after he allegedly had sex with a patient, exploited a patient relationship for financial gain and continued to practice after an emergency suspension of his license in 2018.

Under a consent order, Brian P. Lahey, M.D., 42, agreed to the indefinite suspension of his license by the Kansas Board of Healing Arts and waived his right to a contested hearing, according to KCUR.

He remains licensed to practice in Missouri, but his lawyer said he plans to discontinue his practice there in the next 30 days and has informed his patients.

License reinstatement denied

The North Carolina Medical Board denied a Lexington doctor’s request to reinstate his license.

James Randall Long, M.D., pleaded guilty in 2016 to unlawful distribution of fentanyl and surrendered his license, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. He was not allowed to reapply for his license for two years.

He was sentenced to federal prison for one year and one day in March 2017. He admitted he prescribed the drug to a woman with whom he was romantically involved.

Practice manager accused of fraudulent prescriptions

A former office manager at a Buffalo, New York medical practice has been accused of stealing drugs.

Buffalo resident Kristy Brucz, 33, was charged with obtaining controlled substances by fraud, according to WIVB. Prosecutors said while employed at the practice, Brucz obtained control of the state-issued controlled substance electronic prescribing token and its passwords and used it to issue more than 160 fraudulent prescriptions.

Her actions were discovered when a pharmacist questioned the legitimacy of a prescription and contacted a doctor at the practice. She was fired and if convicted could spend four years in prison and pay a $250,000 fine.
