Payers, regulators could smooth path to value-based payments

Despite the promise of lower costs and better care that value-based payment systems bring, medical providers need more help transitioning to these alternative payment models, according to a new study conducted by Rand Corp. on behalf of the American Medical Association. Payers, for example, could help practices in better manage the patient information they control, while regulators could make this shift less burdensome by easing regulations, noted Mark Friedberg, M.D., an internist at Rand and the study's lead author.
