Chronically ill patients who typically see their physicians four or more times per year may benefit from an approach known as asynchronous virtual visits. With this technological alternative to telemedicine, patients answer condition-specific questions on a secure website, the physician reviews the answers within one day and communicates the next steps. Patients (who are sometimes more forthcoming when answering questionnaires than in person), have embraced the technology, which clinics associated with Massachusetts General Hospital now use.
