Florida Physician Becomes President Elect of Major Physician Organization

R. Mack Harrell, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E., E.C.N.U., was elected President Elect of the (AACE) at its in Phoenix on Sunday, May 5, 2013.

“We live in challenging times for the House of Medicine and for Endocrinology. I consider it a great honor and privilege to serve my sub-specialty as President Elect of AACE, the only organization that exclusively represents the practicing endocrinologist and patients with endocrine disease,” said Dr. Harrell.

As President Elect, Dr. Harrell will serve as an executive officer of AACE who supports the President in all matters of the association, and will assume the duties of the AACE President in the event that the President is unable to act. Dr. Harrell will also serve on the Association’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

Dr. Harrell was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He won Phi Beta Kappa honors in English Literature and Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1971-1975) and was awarded a Morehead Fellowship in Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill from 1975-1979. He received his postgraduate Internal Medicine training from 1979-1982 in at the University of Minnesota and completed his Endocrinology Fellowship at Duke University from 1982-1985 where he specialized in Bone and Mineral Metabolism in Dr. Marc Drezner’s laboratory. Dr. Harrell currently focuses on the planning and implementation of minimally invasive surgery for thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disorders in his south Florida practice.

He is known as an inventor and software entrepreneur in the diabetes informatics field. In these diverse capacities, he has witnessed the evolution of the practice of Endocrinology from every conceivable angle over the past 27 years.
