A Massachusetts doctor in the limelight after diagnosing rare illness

A physician at Anna Jaques Hospital, a small community hospital in Newburyport, Massachusetts, was recently credited for his correct diagnosis of a patient's rare illness that had stymied other doctors, including those at Massachusetts General Hospital. Domenic Martinello, chief of emergency medicine, diagnosed a walk-in patient with Lemierre's disease, which he had seen only once before, and put him on the road to recovery. His work earned the attention of The New York Times' "Think Like a Doctor" blog, as well as the local newspaper. "I'm pleased that we were able to help this man. That can be a great thing about community medicine. You are there to help when people need it," Martinello, told the Newburyport Daily News. Article
