UnitedHealthcare grows ACA exchange footprint to 30 states for 2025

UnitedHealthcare is growing its reach on the Affordable Care Act's (ACA's) exchanges and will offer plans in 30 states for 2025.

The insurance giant will expand its footprint into four new states—Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming—as well as 119 new counties in 13 of the states it currently serves. All told, this brings UHC's reach to 1,250 counties across the 30 states, according to an announcement.

Open enrollment for the individual market officially kicked off Nov. 1 and runs through Jan. 15, 2025. The company noted that for 2024, 90% of its ACA plan enrollees qualified for subsidies that brought down the cost of premiums and that about half had $0 premiums.

“UnitedHealthcare’s plans are designed to help more individuals and families access affordable coverage options that include a wide range of benefits, cost transparency and predictability, and a simple enrollment and member service experience in both English and Spanish,” said Marcus Robinson, CEO, UnitedHealthcare individual and family plans, in the press release.

The insurer said that highlights for its 2025 ACA plans include multiple options with $0 deductibles and "predictable copays" for members as well as plans that offer $0 virtual care services.

Plans also offer coverage for dental and vision, with an allowance of $150 for glasses frames. Members can also find prescriptions for as little as $8 at its 40,000 in-network pharmacy locations.

In addition, plans include $0 fitness classes and discounted memberships to many gyms through One Pass Select as well as up to $150 in rewards for members who perform key healthcare-related tasks, UHC said.
