UPMC, Highmark drama to impact pregnant women

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) parted ways with Highmark last year, but a new obstacle has surfaced. Pregnant women who have independent obstetricians not employed by UPMC or Highmark's network and who choose to deliver at UPMC-Magee will not be covered by the entities' continuity agreement, reported the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Highmark wrote in a letter to UPMC that these independent doctors cannot admit to Magee because it is no longer considered an in-network hospital.
