UnitedHealthcare has added accident protection and specified disease plans to its voluntary benefits product offerings for New York employers and their employees.

UnitedHealthcare’s Accident Protection Plan provides a cash benefit for covered events to help limit employees’ out-of-pocket expenses after an accident, and can also help pay deductibles and copays, and cover lost income. Specified Disease coverage provides a cash benefit and crucial support to employees recovering from a major illness – such as cancer, heart attack or stroke, which account for as much as 80 percent of all critical illnesses.

Employers that offer their workers UnitedHealthcare medical benefit plans can integrate their plans with several ancillary products such as accident protection, specified disease, dental, vision and disability insurance. UnitedHealthcare’s integrated approach, called generates a wide range of data that provides a more complete profile of employees’ health and, as a result, allows for more customized interventions such as wellness initiatives that can help employees reduce costs and achieve better overall health.

“A major illness or short-term spike in unexpected expenses following an accident can be devastating for many people, especially in today’s economy,” said Gary Harger, vice president of voluntary products, UnitedHealthcare. “Some people suffer a major illness or injury that can result in significant expenses and possibly lost income related to their care. These two benefit plans enable employees to focus on healing from their injuries instead of their bills.”

Research shows that simply adding these types of voluntary benefits to a core benefits offering can help improve companies’ bottom lines by increasing productivity and employee engagement. According to LIMRA, a worldwide association of insurance and financial services companies, nine out of 10 employees believe it is important that companies offer a full range of health benefits, including voluntary.

Employers offering both medical and voluntary plans from UnitedHealthcare also benefit from streamlined, more efficient plan administration that enables a greater focus on the overall health of plan participants across all benefits offered by the company.

The Accident Protection Plan and Specified Disease policy are currently available to businesses with 51 or more eligible employees. UnitedHealthcare’s voluntary benefits are available as standalone products, as well as in addition to medical coverage.
