UnitedHealthcare Hosts ‘Do Good. Live Well.’ Community Fair in Minneapolis; Marks National Day of Service and Remembrance

African-American Professional Firefighters Association, other prominent community organizations to participate in day-long event promoting volunteerism and good health

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- UnitedHealthcare will host a community fair at Oak Park Center on Saturday, Sept. 11 – the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

The “Do Good. Live Well.” community fair will be held at Oak Park Center, 1701 Oak Park Avenue North from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will offer a free health fair, entertainment, the building of an outdoor classroom at the Oak Park Center, and other volunteer activities.

“Our memories of September 11 and the dedication of First Responders continue to shape our understanding of service and the power of an individual to make a difference. As a mission-driven organization dedicated to helping people live healthier lives, we must be active citizens in the communities we serve,” said Tom Paul, CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare business, and a Minnesota native. “We look forward to sharing this National Day of Service and Remembrance with the people of Minneapolis and encouraging them to serve their communities and take charge of their health and well-being.”

The community fair will include a neighborhood picnic, performances by local “American Idol” alumna Paris Bennett, Grammy® Award-winning Sounds of Blackness, Lynhurst, and Voice of Culture Drum and Dance, and will include a live broadcast from KMOJ-FM. There will also be a health fair where participants can take part in free health screenings, fitness demonstrations and tours of UnitedHealthcare’s Connected Care mobile clinic. Members of the Minneapolis African-American Professional Firefighters Association will be conducting free CPR training for 50 volunteers who will pledge to train their family members and friends using the American Heart Association’s CPR Anytime™ Personal Learning Program.

Community leaders and representatives from several organizations, including AARP Minnesota, Minneapolis CARES Mentoring Movement, and North Point Health and Wellness Center will also participate.

Earlier this week UnitedHealthcare and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization that helps build playgrounds in communities throughout the country, completed a volunteer project to construct a new playground at Oak Park Center.

“Our kids have been looking forward to the new playground all summer,” said Nancy Seger, youth services manager of Oak Park Center. “To be able to unveil the finished product at an event that brings the community together is a real bonus. We are proud to partner with UnitedHealthcare for this event, and we appreciate the company’s commitment to nonprofit organizations like Oak Park Center.”

The community fair is the latest in UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well.” initiative – a collaboration between UnitedHealthcare and the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s iParticipate campaign – to encourage community volunteerism as a way to improve individual health and well-being. It is just one of the many events employee-volunteer committees throughout the company are organizing on the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

In addition to “Do Good. Live Well.”, UnitedHealthcare supports YMCA programs dedicated to obesity prevention for children, families and adults at risk of developing chronic diseases and provides UnitedHealth HEROES grants in collaboration with Youth Service America for service-learning projects to engage youth as “First Responders” in the fight against childhood obesity. The company’s 2009 Social Responsibility Report, “Healthy Living. Healthy Communities.” is viewable here.
