UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company, has made its third appearance on the InformationWeek 500, an annual listing of the nation’s most innovative users of business technology.

The annual list was announced Sept. 11 at a gala awards ceremony at the InformationWeek 500 Conference in Dana Point, Calif.

InformationWeek recognized UnitedHealthcare for creating Fin360, a unique technology platform that comprises state-of-the-art data, analytics and visualization tools. UnitedHealthcare uses the platform to more quickly identify opportunities to improve customer service for people enrolled in the company’s Medicare plans. Serving nearly one in five Medicare beneficiaries nationwide, UnitedHealthcare is the largest business dedicated to the health and well-being needs of seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries.

Fin360 helps UnitedHealthcare make better use of the valuable information gathered as its associates interact with customers such as free-form text notes entered into their systems during calls with members. Using Fin360, UnitedHealthcare can build predictive models to quickly identify and resolve customer service issues. For example, the platform enables member advocates to detect potential customer service issues and guides them to quickly resolve the issues as well as enhance customer service.

While primarily used today in support of Medicare members, UnitedHealthcare also uses Fin360 to improve customer service for individuals enrolled in its Medicaid plans.

“Fin360 is an example of how technology plays a critical role in creating a more consumer-centric company,” said Mark Pitts, director of data science, solutions and strategy for UnitedHealthcare. “Our customers expect and deserve simple, personal care, and Fin360 has helped provide that by enabling us to use advanced analytics to quickly identify and act on service opportunities.”

“The InformationWeek 500 has recognized the most innovative users of business technology for 24 years, and this year’s innovations were particularly impressive,” said Rob Preston, editor in chief at InformationWeek. “What the editors looked for are unconventional approaches – new technologies, new models, new ways of grabbing business opportunities and solving complex business problems with IT.”

InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation’s most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing, and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America’s best-known companies. The InformationWeek 500 is unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
