Sunshine State Health Plan names long-time Florida physician new chief medical director

SUNRISE, Fla., Aug. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Jeffrey T. Martorana, MD, was named chief medical director of Sunshine State Health Plan (Sunshine Health) a Sunrise-based HMO.

Dr. Martorana, who has more than 20 years of clinical and managed care experience, said he was intrigued by the opportunity posed at Sunshine Health, which is the second largest Medicaid managed care company in Florida. As a member of Sunshine Health's senior management team, Dr. Martorana will participate in strategic planning, will be responsible for enterprise-wide quality, and will focus on community health issues.

"I was impressed by the forward-thinking people here," Dr. Martorana said. "Given the changes in the way Medicaid will be delivered in the state, this was an opportunity to join an organization that will have a dynamic impact on the people of Florida, both in the delivery of healthcare as well as the overall general health of the population."

Sunshine Health, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Centene Corporation, has been serving Medicaid recipients since 2009. It currently serves 210,000 Medicaid recipients and was recently awarded contracts from Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration for 10 of 11 regions as part of the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long term Care (LTC program).

"We are pleased to have someone with Dr. Martorana's expertise and breadth of knowledge as our chief medical director," Chris Paterson, CEO and president of Sunshine Health, said. "He has considerable experience in serving the needs of Medicaid members, is wholly engaged in our community, and shares our philosophy of providing the best care possible and in an efficient manner."

Dr. Martorana earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, Va.  He completed his internship and residency in family practice at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville and was in a large multi-physician family practice there in the 1990s.

Dr. Martorana is board certified in family practice and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In addition, he is a member of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Physician Executives.
