SEIU-ULTCW Selected as Covered California Grant Partner

Awarded $1 Million Grant for Outreach and Education

LOS ANGELES, May 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SEIU United Long Term Care Workers' Union (ULTCW) is proud to announce that it has been selected as a grant partner by Covered California and the recipient of a $1 million outreach and education grant. The partnership and funding will be used over an 8-month period beginning July 1, 2013, to bring increased awareness about new healthcare benefits and to educate Californians about the subsidy programs available to them under the Affordable Care Act.

"We are pleased to be one of the first recipients of Covered California's outreach and education grants," said Laphonza Butler, President of SEIU-ULTCW.  "As long term care workers, we understand the importance of ensuring that Californians have the information they'll need when making decisions about their healthcare options under the new healthcare law, and we are well positioned to reach the array of diverse communities in which we live and serve.  We have a lot of education to do in a short time, but we're ready."

One of 48 lead grant partners, SEIU-ULTCW will work to advance Covered California's mission to increase the number of Californians with health insurance, improve health care quality, and reduce coverage costs to ensure California's diverse population has fair and equitable access to quality health coverage.

"We are excited to build on our partnerships with organizations that have trusted relationships in diverse communities throughout the state," said Peter V. Lee, Executive Director of Covered California in a statement. "Together, we can significantly strengthen our effort to ensure as many Californians as possible are aware of and are enrolled in the new health insurance options this fall for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2014."

The selected organizations will reach nearly 9 million individuals and more than 200,000 small businesses in California's 58 counties. Covered California will focus its outreach on 5.3 million Californians in need of individual insurance, about half of whom may be eligible for financial assistance with their premiums.

The goal of the grant program is to increase awareness about the new benefits, to educate targeted audiences about the subsidy programs available to them and to motivate consumers and small businesses to be part of obtaining health insurance.
