Saluting Maine's Everyday Heroes

Portland Pirates, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine Announce Unique Partnership

S. PORTLAND, Maine, Feb. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Portland Pirates and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine have teamed up this winter to create a unique program which recognizes Maine's community heroes.

"Anthem's Community Angels program recognizes everyday heroes — people in our local community who have led, created, or otherwise been instrumental in activities that help make our community better," said Brian Petrovek, Managing Owner/CEO of the Portland Pirates.

Examples of Anthem Community Angels activities include building a playground, raising money for local non-profit agencies, and involvement in youth athletics, etc.

The Pirates are now accepting nominations for the award.  Fans can visit www.portlandpirates.com and click on "Anthem Angels" in the community section to submit their nominations.

A total of three honorees will be chosen before the conclusion of the 2010-11 season. Each honoree will be recognized at a home game in an on-ice ceremony and will receive a number of prizes from Anthem and the Pirates, including a framed Pirates jersey. Anthem will also make a $500.00 donation in the honoree's name to the non-profit of his or her choice.

"The selfless efforts of volunteers across Maine make our state a better place," said Dan Corcoran, president and general manager, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine. "This program is one small way in which we can thank and recognize them for all that they do."
